Mirror the JD's exact wording

If the posting says 'project management,' don't write 'managed projects' — ATS matching is literal. Use the employer's phrasing wherever it's honestly true.

Aim for 75%+, not 100%

A perfect match usually means keyword stuffing, which humans spot instantly. A 75-85% match is competitive and still reads naturally.

Fix the missing-keyword list first

The biggest score jumps come from adding the 3-5 required keywords you are missing entirely — not from tweaking ones you already have.

Don't hide keywords in white text

The old 'white keywords on a white background' trick is flagged by every modern ATS and gets resumes auto-rejected. Keep keywords in visible, honest context.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 70% match good?

Yes. Most ATS-based first-pass filters use thresholds around 60-70%. Anything above 75% puts you in the top 10-15% of applicants for that role. Above 85% is exceptional but not usually necessary.

Do ATSes really reject resumes automatically?

Not exactly. Most ATSes rank rather than reject — recruiters see the ranked list and typically only review the top 25-40 candidates. So a low ATS score usually means invisible, not rejected.

Should I stuff keywords to get a higher score?

No. Modern ATSes (especially Workday and Greenhouse) use context, not just density. Stuffing keywords hurts you because human recruiters see the resume next — and stuffing is a giveaway. Use keywords naturally.

Does this work for non-English resumes?

It works for English resumes only right now. If you're applying for a role that accepts a non-English resume, that job typically doesn't use an ATS in the first place.
